Mohammad Baba, a luminary in the world of photography, stands as a testament to the transformative
power of visual storytelling. Born and raised in Gaza, Palestine, Mohammad’s journey from the heart of conflict zones to international recognition has been marked by his unparalleled dedication to capturing the human experience through the lens.
Mohammad’s academic foundation was laid at the Islamic University in Gaza, where he earned a
Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Media. Building upon this, he pursued a Diploma in Media Masters at the Research and Studies Institution in Cairo, Egypt. Armed with academic rigor, Mohammad embarked on a career that seamlessly blended his passion for photography with a commitment to education.
His professional trajectory began in 1997 as a freelance journalist for Alaayam Newspaper, setting the stage for a career that would evolve significantly. From 1999 to 2001, he honed his craft as a
photographer at Reuters Agency before becoming a major contributor to the French News Agency ‘AFP’
in 2003, where he continues to make a profound impact to this day.
Mohammad’s lens has become a powerful tool for documenting the realities of conflict. His images are a poignant reflection of the human condition in the midst of adversity, capturing moments that transcend borders and cultures. The Guardian recognized his exceptional talent in 2015, ranking him as the fourth-best photographer in the world.
Simultaneously, Mohammad has been a guiding force in education, serving as a University Professor at The Islamic University Gaza (IUG) since 2009. Beyond the classroom, he has shared his expertise as a Photography Trainer for diverse local, international, and private organizations since 2008. His commitment to nurturing the next generation of photographers extends to organizing training courses in collaboration with various institutions.
Mohammad’s skills extend beyond the act of capturing moments. Proficient in Photoshop, he not only
takes photographs but processes them into compelling visual narratives. His ability to organize
photography exhibitions, coupled with his specialty in written journalism, underscores his multifaceted talents.
As a leader, Mohammad currently oversees a team of four, demonstrating not only his prowess behind
the lens but also his exceptional organizational and managerial skills. His leadership has played a pivotal role in securing prestigious awards, including the World Press Photo Prize for feature story category in 2009-2010 and the Editor and Publisher’s first prize in the News Photo category in 2008.
The global recognition of Mohammad’s work is further exemplified through his participation in
international exhibitions. From the Sweden Exhibition about the Gaza War in 2009 to the current
exhibitions in Britain and the Netherlands, his photographs have been a source of both reflection and inspiration on the international stage.
