Peter Robinson

2025 / Achievement in Sports

Peter Robinson MA (b 1944) was educated at Leicester College of Art and The Royal College of Art.

During a long career in documentary photography, he also shot some sports events. These include 13 World Cups and 9 Olympic Games, not to mention the thousands of football matches in England and Europe in the 60s to 80s. His football images from 98 countries, have been featured in more than 50 books, thousands of magazines, and liberally sampled by football social media!

His monograph ‘Football Days’ is a best selling illustrated book of football, and regarded as a definitive work on the subject. The follow-up book ‘1966 Uncovered‘ – a visual record of the 1966 World Cup, was completed in 2006 – both books were awarded ‘Illustrated Sports Book of The Year’.

From 2007 – 2017 , he was a Professor at The University of Lincoln in the Faculty of Media.
In 2012 he was the Photo Operations Chief for the London Olympic Games football tournament.
In 2015 he was appointed as the photography consultant to THE FIFA MUSEUM in Zurich. Institutions who have his football work in their collections include :
Deutsches Historisches Museum in Berlin Germany
Museo Historico Nacional in Buenos Aires Argentina and The National Portrait Gallery in London

In 2022 The New York Times / The Athletic, declared he was arguably the world’s greatest living fooball photographer.

The most recent exhibition of his football images was in February 2025 at ‘Xposure’ in Sharjah UAE.
